While India has made massive strides in expanding port capacity and cargo handling over the past decade, its shipping fleet capacity and maritime financing ecosystem lag behind. Today, India accounts for less than 1% of global deadweight tonnage, causing a foreign exchange drain of over $75 Billion to $100 Billion annually in freight payments to foreign carriers.
In this presentation from the Sagarmanthan Dialogue, representative leadership from CARE Ratings—India’s largest homegrown credit rating agency—breaks down the policy reforms, institutional structures, and alternative financing mechanisms needed to bridge this gap. Learn how GIFT City IFSC, Maritime Development Funds (MDF), infrastructure status, and credit enhancement structures can transform India into a globally competitive maritime financial hub.
