Honoring the Creative Journey

Welcome to Allie’s Creative Café. ☕🎨 Today we’re taking a little time to honor the creative journey—not just where we are now, but everything we’ve made, learned, tried, struggled through, and discovered along the way. I’m surrounded by artwork we’ve created together during our live conversations, and it got me thinking about how easy it is to overlook our own creative progress. A sketch might have seemed small when we made it. An unfinished painting might have felt like something we needed to “fix.” A new technique might have felt like a failure simply because we hadn’t learned it yet. But when we look back, those pieces become evidence of the journey. We talk about what it means to recognize our creative wins: returning to art after years away, making something simply for fun, trying a new technique, working through fear, sharing something we’ve made, or taking one more small step when we could have given up. We also talk about the messy, practical side of being a creative—learning how to sell and share our work, figuring out platforms and tools, shipping things, trying things that don't work, and learning as we go. There isn't a perfect path through any of it. One of the conversations that really stayed with me was about fear. Sometimes the piece we most want to make is also the piece that scares us. I’ve experienced that myself, especially when creating something live. The answer isn't always to wait until we feel ready. Sometimes we just use what we have and take the next step. We’re joined by Carla, who shares her intuitive biomorphic artwork and the way creating can become a calming, almost channeled process for her. Her work is a beautiful reminder that there are so many different ways to create—and that loving what you make can simply mean knowing that it came honestly from you. And, as always, we come back to the candle. Lighting another candle doesn't make the first candle any dimmer. It simply creates more light. That’s what I want Allie’s Creative Café to be: a place where we can share what we’re making, encourage one another, learn from one another, and celebrate the fact that there is room for all of our creative voices. So if you’re in the messy middle, starting again, learning something new, afraid to share your work, or simply wondering whether the little things you make count— They do. The tiny moments add up.
