Are you treating church like a restaurant? Many Christians today approach their local church the same way they approach a dining experience: show up, expect to be served, and move on if the product does not meet expectations. But this consumer mindset is one of the most quietly destructive forces in the modern church, and Scripture calls us to something radically different.
Ephesians 2:19 reminds us that when we gave our lives to Christ, we were not added to a customer list. We were placed in a family. God did not redeem customers. He redeemed sons and daughters. That truth reshapes everything about how we think about belonging, serving, and growing within a local church community.
In this message, we explore the contrast between a business and a family, and why that difference matters deeply for how we engage with the body of Christ. A business exists to serve your comfort. A family exists to form your character. Just as a parent teaches a child to do the dishes not for perfectly clean dishes but to raise a responsible adult, the church uses challenge, friction, and imperfect seasons to grow us into who God designed us to be.
We also unpack three core beliefs that drive a consumer mindset in the church: the idea that personal needs are central, the idea that attendance is a form of payment, and the idea that spiritual maturity is optional while comfort is the goal. Each of these beliefs quietly works against the kind of community God calls us to in Philippians 2:3-5, where we are invited to count others as more significant than ourselves and look to the interests of those around us.
Jesus did not walk into the Father's house asking what He could get. He came to serve. He came to give His life. And He calls us to follow that same example, taking up our cross and choosing the family over our own preferences.
If you have ever felt frustrated with your church, tempted to church hop, or unsure whether you are truly committed to your local body of believers, this message is for you.
