Sleep Token - Calcutta | Clearest I've Ever Seen Vessel's Face

Sleep Token – "Calcutta" FIRST TIME reaction. The first song off EP Two, and the first thing they put out after signing with Basick Records. Full thoughts below. First off, I have no idea what Calcutta refers to. The only Calcutta I know is the city in India, and I'm pretty sure that's spelled with a K now. If it's a reference to another town, biblical or otherwise, tell me, because I'm lost. This is the clearest I've ever seen Vessel's face in a Sleep Token video. Bare face, bare chin, and then the mask goes on. That ties straight back to what I was saying on the first EP: the split between Vessel and Sleep. He's showing you his actual face and then putting on the facade. I could have done without the mouth close-ups though. Seeing the saliva come between his teeth while he sings made me genuinely uncomfortable. And then it gets worse: black paint on the teeth, a mouthful of blood, the heavy guitar comes in, and the whole ending turns into a horror movie. Something like Saw. The mask is on and now he's being tormented inside his own head. First half pretty, second half not pretty, two sides of the same coin. We also might be getting the introduction of II here, with just a potato sack over his head. I don't think II was shown at all on the first EP. There's a guitarist and what turned out to be an eight-string with sacks on their heads too, and I can't tell if that's the touring members or Vessel playing everyone. Good song, very good song. Not the greatest Sleep Token song of all time, but on par with EP1. I couldn't overtly hear what the label changed. That's usually marketing, getting it in front of eyes. And there's a line in here about being whole just for a second. Maybe that's him embracing the Sleep side. 💬 What does "Calcutta" actually refer to? And who's under those sacks: III and IV, or Vessel playing everybody? 🔔 Subscribe — the rest of EP Two is coming, plus more live performances and more of II's Drumeo videos. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 The first song off EP Two 0:24 What does Calcutta even mean? 0:58 Did signing to a label change the sound? 1:37 First listen 2:17 Clearest I've ever seen Vessel's face 3:36 "Stop zooming in his mouth" 4:43 Bare face, then the mask goes on 6:24 The introduction of II 7:46 Just a potato sack on his head 8:42 Are those the touring members? 9:44 Who's got black on his teeth? 10:42 Mouthful of blood 12:15 It turned into a horror movie 13:10 What did the record label actually do? 14:00 Final thoughts All rights to the original song and video belong to Sleep Token and Basick Records.
