"Language Learning Strategies: Theorising the transition to English Medium Instruction Contexts" UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics Research Seminar, University College London, 27 Oct 2021 (Wed), 12:30-12:30, held on Zoom Prof Ernesto Macaro, University of Oxford Hosted by Dr Jim McKinley, UCL Institute of Education Abstract Although there have been decades of theorising on language learner strategies, together with the practical application of strategies research through strategy-based instruction, there is very little theory and research on the strategies that students deploy when they are learning content in an English Medium Instruction (EMI) context. I define EMI as: The use of the English language to teach academic subjects (other than English itself) in countries or jurisdictions where the first language of the majority of the population is not English. In this talk I will identify the similarities and differences between strategies for purely foreign language learning and strategies where content learning is being attempted through a foreign language (i.e. English). Bio Ernesto Macaro is Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics and a Senior Research Fellow at Worcester College, University of Oxford. He is the founding Director of the Centre for Research and Development in English Medium Instruction (EMI) in the department. He was also the Director of the Department from 2013 to 2016. Before becoming a teacher educator and researcher, Ernesto was a language teacher in secondary schools in the UK for 16 years. Ernesto’s current research focuses on second language learning strategies and on the interaction between teachers and learners in second language classrooms and in those where English is the medium of instruction. He has published widely in these areas.
