He was also an important innovator in the domain of symphony in France. The piano sonatas op. 1 and 2 were the first compositions Méhul published after he arrived in Paris in 1779. The Sonatas op. 1 were published in 1783, when he was only 20 years old. Although they were published "for harpsichord or fortepiano", they display a strongly idiomatic piano writing.
