As winter drags on, he becomes the valley's lifeline, reading survivors' names, trading supplies, and passing on rules learned the hard way: don't go outside in whiteouts, don't answer the door, don't trust voices calling your name, even ones you love, because something out there mimics them perfectly and people who follow those voices vanish. That's how he lost his wife, Marta. Soon an "echo" of his own voice starts broadcasting at night, predicting who will disappear next, and he learns the cause traces back to Station Kestrel, an old Cold War listening post where researchers blasted every recorded human voice into the sky and woke up something vast and lonely that feeds on voices and doesn't know how to let go. Wendell leaves the station in the hands of Pip, a brave twelve-year-old, and travels there with a small group to shut the station down. The attempt only brings the sky crashing lower, and the dead come back as silent "Listeners" who creep closer whenever the radio goes quiet. In the end, Pip realizes the thing has never heard anyone say goodbye, so the last forty-one radio stations left on Earth say farewell to their lost loved ones together and then sign off on purpose. Wendell finally says what he never said to Marta and lets her go.
