Sam Cooke had a voice America could not refuse. What almost no one remembers is that he also had something far rarer: the deed to his own work. Long before it was thought possible, a preacher's son from Clarksdale, Mississippi built himself a house no record company could put him out of. He founded his own publishing company. He founded his own record label — and filled it with other people's names, not his own. He sat across from one of the largest record companies on earth and made them sign a page that said the music was his.
