My boss leaned close enough for her perfume to distract me from the entire wedding reception and whispered, “Eli, I need you to act jealous.” I nearly dropped my champagne. Sloane Bennett was twenty-five, beautiful, terrifyingly confident, and the last woman I should have been thinking about romantically. She was also the person who signed my paychecks. “Jealous of who?” I asked. She nodded toward a handsome man approaching us with two drinks. “Him. Just make it look like you don't enjoy seeing another man flirt with me.” I should have asked why. Instead, when the stranger reached for her hand, I stepped closer, slipped an arm around her waist, and said, “Sorry, buddy. I've been waiting all night to have her to myself.” Sloane froze. The stranger blinked. Then she pressed her lips against my ear and whispered, “Not that much.” But she didn't remove my arm. In fact, her fingers tightened around my wrist. And when I looked down, I realized she was blushing. The problem wasn't that I had gone too far with the performance. It was that, for one dangerous second, neither of us appeared to be pretending. Before we continue, like this video, subscribe, and tell me in the comments: if someone asked you to fake jealousy, would you play along, or wonder why they chose you?
