Moving the Mohawk: New York Central 3001's Return to Indiana

The American Locomotive Project is securing a new future for New York Central No. 3001—transforming this landmark steam locomotive into the rail industry’s newest cultural attraction: https://www.americanloco.org/ Built by the American Locomotive Company in 1940, No. 3001 is one of the last surviving New York Central steam locomotives. The project’s $4.3 million fundraising campaign reached its first deadline in 2025, but continued support is essential. The first milestone will fund preparation, transportation, and the mechanical teardown needed to begin restoration, while ongoing donations will keep crews and volunteers working throughout the year. Retired in 1957, No. 3001 was purchased by the Texas & Pacific Railway, modified, and renumbered as T&P No. 909 for display in a Dallas park. She later joined the Southwest Railroad Historical Society before returning to Elkhart, Indiana, in 1984. Following the dissolution of the Lakeshore Railroad Foundation, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society partnered with the City of Elkhart and the National New York Central Museum to explore a new future for the locomotive. In 2026, it will ship to Fort Wayne to begin restoration.
