This Is Why Abia Is Ahead Of Many Nigerian States 🇳🇬

Aba is one of Nigeria’s most important commercial and manufacturing cities and I came here to see what is actually happening on the ground. After travelling from Umuahia into Aba, I explored some of the city’s major roads, businesses, markets and manufacturing clusters to understand why Abia has been receiving so much attention for development and economic activity. I visited the Ekeoha Shopping Complex, where redevelopment of the shopping complex has produced newly built shops and Phase One reallocation was announced in 2026. I also explored Aba’s material markets, where buyers can find a huge variety of clothing materials, before going into the footwear manufacturing areas to see how the famous Made-in-Aba production ecosystem works. And of course, I visited Ariaria International Market, one of the most important commercial centres in Aba and a major part of the city’s leather, footwear, garment and trading ecosystem. Ariaria dates back to 1976 and has grown into one of West Africa’s major markets. I also looked at the changes to Aba’s road infrastructure. In May 2026, the Abia State Government announced the commissioning of 13 roads across Aba and the start of the first phase of the Aba Ring Road project. But beyond the roads and buildings, the bigger story is business. Aba has a huge network of artisans, manufacturers, traders and entrepreneurs producing footwear, leather goods, garments and other products for customers in Nigeria and beyond. NIPC describes Aba as one of West Africa’s major manufacturing centres and reports more than 300,000 artisan workshops in the city based on an ABIPA/SME survey.
