🍂🏔️ *Celebrating 30 Years of the Cherohala Skyway! (1996–2026)*
Stretching approximately 43 miles through the mountains of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina, the Cherohala Skyway is one of the most breathtaking scenic drives in the Southeast. But behind its beautiful mountain views lies a remarkable story of history, determination, challenges, and compromise.
In this special edition of **Covert Adventures**, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Cherohala Skyway, officially dedicated on October 12, 1996.
Our journey begins in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, where we explore the region's early logging railroads, the Babcock Lumber Company, and the wagon trains that helped bring attention to the need for a highway connecting Tennessee and North Carolina.
We'll also discover the remarkable efforts of former Tellico Plains Mayor Charles Hall, who spent decades helping make the dream of a mountain highway a reality.
🛣️ *But did you know the Cherohala Skyway could have taken a very different path?*
During its decades of planning and construction, an alternative route was proposed through some of the most remote and environmentally sensitive mountains in the region. Portions of that early highway approach were even constructed, including the road that still ends at Maple Springs Overlook in North Carolina.
However, concerns about protecting the surrounding wilderness led to years of debate, opposition, and changes to the project.
Rather than abandoning the dream of connecting these mountain communities, local leaders, government officials, highway supporters, and environmental organizations worked toward a better solution.
The result was the spectacular route along Santeetlah Crest that we enjoy today, providing breathtaking views while helping preserve the surrounding wilderness for future generations.
*It's a story of how people with different priorities ultimately helped shape something extraordinary.*
Along the way, we'll explore:
🚂 Historic logging railroads and the Babcock Lumber Company
🐎 The 1958 wagon trains that helped promote the highway
🏕️ Indian Boundary Recreation Area and its 60th anniversary
🌲 The Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests
🏔️ Beautiful mountain overlooks and spectacular fall colors
🌉 Charles Hall and the decades-long effort to complete the highway
🛣️ The unfinished highway approach at Maple Springs Overlook
🌿 How wilderness preservation helped shape the final route
Featuring stunning **4K footage, aerial drone views, historical photographs, and archival information**, this documentary explores the people, places, and decisions that made the Cherohala Skyway possible.
Thirty years after its opening, the Cherohala Skyway stands as more than just a scenic mountain road. It represents decades of hard work, determination, and the ability to find common ground between progress and preservation.
*The Cherohala Skyway could have taken a different path. But thanks to the people who came together to find a better solution, the road we have today offers something truly special: a way to experience these beautiful mountains while preserving the wilderness that makes them extraordinary.*
