The 1966 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham vs. the 1959 Cadillac: which one was really "Standard of the World"? Everyone remembers the towering fins and chrome excess of the 1959 Cadillac, but seven years later, Cadillac's design team quietly built something arguably better — a disciplined, razor-clean flagship sedan that traded spectacle for restraint. In this video, we break down the 1966 Fleetwood Brougham body line by body line: the flat fender profile that defied GM styling chief Bill Mitchell's house preference, the Miller race car grille motif shared with the Chevrolet Nova, the untrapped hood that made the most expensive Cadillac one of the cheapest to stamp, and the legendary Wayne Kady tail lamp design with zero visible fasteners — a purity so extreme that changing a bulb could mean dropping the rear bumper.
We also cover the Fleetwood hierarchy, the wheelbase gap between Chevrolet and Cadillac, the 429 cubic inch V8, the last truly Cadillac-grade interior before the 1970s decline, real ownership warnings for buyers today, and how Cadillac walked away from this restraint almost immediately after with the wide-open grilles of 1969 and 1970.
If you own a classic Cadillac, or you're chasing one, make sure you know how to verify it before you buy or sell. Our full VIN and numbers-matching guide, Know What It's Worth, is linked above.
