Teaching beginners to read and spell

Teachers usually aren't taught much about the structure of the English language at university, and tend to draw on research of variable quality to teach early literacy in a confusing way. Too many children struggle as a result. It would be better for everyone if teachers understood our language's structure and broke it down into its smallest parts for beginners, and taught using explicit, systematic, synthetic phonics. This would give all children the best chance of learning to read and spell well.
