Everyone assumes Pepsi has spent its whole life losing to Coca-Cola. In 2024, something stranger happened: Pepsi fell out of the top three best-selling sodas in America for the first time in nearly forty years — and Coca-Cola had nothing to do with it. The real rival was the price tag. Pepsi was built in the 1930s on one simple promise: twice as much soda for the same nickel, after founder Charles Guth rescued the brand from bankruptcy out of pure spite toward Coca-Cola. That "more for your money" arithmetic carried Pepsi and, later, PepsiCo's snacks for almost ninety years. Then it reversed. Gatorade bottles quietly shrank from 32 to 28 ounces. Snack bags crossed $7. Walmart started handing Frito-Lay's shelf space to cheaper rivals. An activist investor took a $4 billion stake and demanded change. PepsiCo stock lost more than a third of its value. The company that taught America to count ounces for a nickel ended up on the losing side of that same comparison.
