On July 10, 2026, Victor Wembanyama agreed a five-year rookie-scale extension with San Antonio covering 2027-28 through 2031-32. He also left the Rose Rule escalator language out of it, which locks the deal to the 25 percent maximum tier instead of the 30 percent tier. This episode is about what San Antonio actually buys with the difference.
ONE SOURCE SET, DECLARED UP FRONT. Three outlets published this contract three different ways. This episode uses the Hoops Rumors set throughout and never blends them: $252.3 million at 25 percent, approximately $302.8 million had the escalators been included and met, a gap of $50,460,000. That set was chosen because it is the only one whose year-by-year figures are published anywhere, and because those figures reconcile exactly against Basketball-Reference's own San Antonio contract table, which already carries the signed deal. Running the same eight-percent-of-year-one ladder at 30 percent reproduces the $302.8 million figure from scratch.
EVERY 2027-28 DOLLAR IS A PROJECTION, AND IT IS LABELLED AS ONE. This contract is written as a percentage of a salary cap that has not been set. Hoops Rumors says so itself. The league projects a 2027-28 cap of $174 million, reported by Eric Pincus, and notes it may be adjusted during the season. Every tax, apron and mid-level figure here is that projected cap scaled by this season's official published ratios. That method reproduces the league's own reported second-apron projection of about $234 million, which is why the other lines are usable, and a projection stamp rides all eight scenes so a total is never seen without its caveat.
THE PART THAT IS USUALLY TOLD BACKWARDS. He did not hand back money he had already earned. Rose Rule eligibility is measured on July 1, 2027, and there are five routes in: All-NBA in the most recent season or two of the past three, Defensive Player of the Year on the same terms, or an MVP anywhere in the window. He has exactly one qualifying season, 2025-26, when he was a unanimous Defensive Player of the Year on 100 first-place votes of 100 and made All-NBA First Team. In 2024-25 he played 46 games and the 65-game rule left his award column with a single entry on it. So every one of the five routes runs through 2026-27, a season nobody has played. He forfeited a conditional option, not a payment.
WHAT HE BOUGHT, AS OUR ARITHMETIC. Basketball-Reference lists eleven San Antonio players under contract for 2027-28 at $201,629,313, and the eleven rows sum to the table's own total to the dollar. Three are team options and one is partially guaranteed, so the fully guaranteed floor is $160,060,774 across seven players. On the projected lines, the 25 percent tier plus a full non-taxpayer mid-level lands at $217,497,646, which is $2,970,283 under the projected first apron. The 30 percent tier plus the same mid-level lands at $226,197,646, which is $5,729,717 over it. A team may only use the full non-taxpayer mid-level if doing so does not carry it past the first apron. So the deleted clause did not merely save salary. On these projections it is the difference between that exception being usable and not.
WHAT THE SLOT HAS TO BUY. San Antonio won 62 games, ranked 4th in offence and 3rd in defence, and lost the Finals to New York 4-1. Across that series his true shooting went .626 in the regular season, .606 through the whole playoff run, and .531 in the Finals, while his scoring went up to 26.0 a game on a 30.3 usage rate. Devin Vassell posted a .726 true shooting on a 10.9 usage rate. De'Aaron Fox used the ball twice as often and posted a .430. The two Spurs who shot best touched it least.
Our reading of that, labelled on screen: the archetype the preserved slot has to buy is not another shooter. It is someone who can begin a possession alone.
