From the liner notes:
Maria de Barros was born in Dakar,Senegal and spent the first 13 years of her life in the country of Mauritania in northwest Africa. But it is the music of CapeVerde, her parents’ native land, that serves as her main musical inspiration. Located 300 miles off the coast of Senegal, CapeVerde is an isolated series of islands with a rich musical tradition that reflects a history of African and Portuguese influences.
De Barros’s godmotheris Cesaria Evora, Cape Verde’s most famous musical ambassador, and like Evora, De Barros’s music can be achingly melancholy as well as spirited and uplifting. “Mi Nada Un CaTem (I Have Nothing)” asks why anyone would try to take advantage of people from poor countries. “Why worry / If I have nothing? / Why do you try to hurt me? / I am poor but comfortable.”
