Cooking for one from a recipe that says "serves four to six" so often ends with half a dried-out dish in the bin. In this video I share ten old British dinners you can cook in a two-pound loaf tin, from my mother's Sunday cards to my Uncle Fred. Each one makes two portions, one hot tonight and one planned for tomorrow. You'll find meatloaf, cottage pie, salmon loaf, braised beef, steak and kidney pudding, macaroni cheese, fish pie, savoury bread pudding, chicken and leek crumble, and a cheese and lentil loaf. I'll also explain why a narrow, deep tin keeps food moist where a big shallow dish dries it out, and how to store the second half safely. If you'd like more suppers planned this way, my book Cooking for One the British Way has 60 to 80 proper suppers with the leftovers worked out. Now I'd love to hear from you. What did your family call the tin your dinner went to work in? Fred called it his snap tin. In the North East it was bait, and in Scotland a piece. Tell me in the comments what it was called in your town and what your father carried in it. If you enjoy proper old-fashioned British cooking, do subscribe and come and cook with me again.
