Have you got an old window leaning in your shed or your barn?
That window can keep you in fresh salad until March. But not the way most people use it. Where I live, from just before Thanksgiving to the third week of January, the days are too short for greens to grow at all, glass or no glass. So a cold frame built in December and sown with seed gives you nothing until spring. Set the same frame over greens that are already grown, this week, and you pick from it all winter long.

In this one I walk my cold frame through the whole winter. How to build it from a free window and four old boards, and the one thing to check on the paint first. Why a sunny day kills more cold frame greens than any frost, and the free stick I prop mine with. Which greens can take a ten degree night and which turn to wet paper. The famous black water jug trick, and the honest truth about how much it really does. Why you should never pick a frozen leaf. And how the same frame starts your spring lettuce in February and toughens your tomato plants in March.
You don't need anything special for any of this. An old window, a few boards, a bank of fallen leaves and a stick of firewood.
Watch to the end to hear what my husband Earl did to my lettuce one January, and where that notched stick came from.
🌱 How I grow nearly $2,000 of groceries a year on hard clay, in my large-print garden book. It's on my website too: tap my channel name, then callowayruth.com.
