Since purchasing Whatcha Smokin’ in 2021, Gwen has transformed an already successful rural restaurant into a destination drawing guests from across Iowa, the country and even the world. Under her leadership, sales have quadrupled, the team has grown from 30 to nearly 80, and the restaurant’s footprint, catering operation and reach have expanded dramatically. National recognition has followed, including being named Iowa’s best barbecue by Food & Wine and one of USA TODAY’s 2026 Restaurants of the Year. But Gwen measures success by more than growth or accolades. Her company is named Spread Kindness, a philosophy reflected in the way she leads her team and engages with the Luther community. At Whatcha Smokin’, managers are called “coaches”—a reflection of Gwen’s belief that leadership means encouraging, listening to and building up the people around you. For proving that ambitious growth, remarkable hospitality and national recognition can thrive in rural Iowa, we’re proud to recognize Gwen as our 2026 Rural Restaurant Operator of the Year. Thank you to the sponsor of this award, Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling.
