Margaret Chu Dufour was 56, a registered nurse who had just moved from Knoxville, Tennessee to Eagle Lake, Florida. The Polk County Sheriff says her 21-year-old son, Gibson Nash, had been arrested twice in Tennessee that spring, accused of threatening her with a knife. On July 14, 2026 she drove back to Tennessee and brought him home. On July 21 deputies found her dead in her house, hours after her BMW was involved in three crashes on U.S. Highway 27. Gibson Nash is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving injury. He has not been tried or convicted and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The mental health diagnoses mentioned are what family members told detectives; the sheriff's office says it has not confirmed them. All footage in this video is from the Polk County Sheriff's Office news conference of August 5, 2026.
