Episode 5 | Joy, Formation, and Purpose: Sustaining Middle School Teachers for the Long Run
The Middle School Culture Blueprint: Reflections from the Field
How do we create school cultures where teachers are not simply surviving the school year but continuing to grow, experience JOY, and find purpose in their vocation?
In this inspiring episode, I welcome three wonderful Catholic educators from the School of the Incarnation in the Archdiocese of Baltimore:
Dr. Nancy Baker, Principal
Christine Hinton, Assistant Principal
George Milan, Middle School Teacher
Together, we explore the importance of protecting JOY, supporting educator well-being, building trust, and sustaining the adults who make Catholic education possible.
Each guest brings a valuable perspective to the conversation.
Dr. Baker reminds school leaders of the importance of supporting balance among faculty and staff. Educators need opportunities for renewal so they can sustain their energy, enthusiasm, and JOY throughout the school year.
Christine brings the assistant principal's perspective, emphasizing the importance of establishing and maintaining trust. Strong relationships among colleagues create the foundation for a supportive and collaborative school culture.
George, a veteran middle school teacher, reminds us of something wonderfully simple yet powerful: never underestimate the importance of humor in the classroom! Laughter, relationships, and finding JOY in everyday moments matter.
The school year will inevitably bring unexpected challenges, even for the most prepared teams. Protecting JOY requires intentional leadership, strong relationships, and a commitment to supporting the whole educator.
As Dr. LaTonya White and I prepare The Middle School Culture Blueprint for publication with the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), these conversations continue to reinforce the importance of our four pillars: Belonging, Clarity, Coherence, and Formation.
A heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Baker, Christine, and George for generously sharing their time, experience, and reflections from the field.
Our educators are highly educated professionals who have chosen a meaningful vocation. May we continue to see them, respect them, support them, and thank them for their service to Catholic education.
If we want our students to thrive, we must also create school cultures where our educators can thrive.
Let's keep sharing the good!
