What happens when the person you love changes every time you think you understand them? “PUZZLE” by Solandina follows two people caught in that uncertainty: one searching for a clearer view, the other becoming someone that view can no longer contain. Every answer offers a moment of closeness. Then something shifts, and the search begins again. “You’re not a mystery / You’re a changing state.” We often imagine that intimacy means finally figuring someone out. Learning the meaning of their silences. Understanding their fears. Knowing what they need before they ask. There is tenderness in that attention, but there can also be a desire for certainty: if I understand you completely, perhaps you can never surprise me, hurt me, or leave. What does that desire do to love? In this song, observation becomes a metaphor for the pressure of being understood. A question can invite someone to open up. It can also make them feel examined. A definition can offer recognition, yet leave no room for who they are becoming. The person seeking the truth may begin to shape the very thing they are trying to discover. “Like I’m rewriting you / Just by where I start.” The listener never gets a comfortable explanation for the other person’s transformations. Are they withdrawing whenever closeness becomes possible? Are they changing to meet someone else’s expectations? Or is the narrator mistaking each partial glimpse for the whole person? That uncertainty matters. We hear one person’s longing, frustration, and growing exhaustion. We never hear the other person answer. “The closer I define / The less of you is mine.” There is a painful contradiction in wanting to know someone so deeply that we begin to think of that knowledge as possession. We hold a version of them in our minds, then feel betrayed when they move beyond it. But sometimes the person has changed. Sometimes our understanding was incomplete. And sometimes we have fallen in love with what we hoped they would become. “PUZZLE” lives where those possibilities become difficult to separate. By the final verse, the search has left the narrator with “the echo of a shape” in their mind. It is a lonely image: loving someone whose presence can still be felt, while no longer knowing how much of that presence belongs to memory, imagination, or the person themselves. How do we stay open to someone’s complexity without losing our own sense of what is real? How much uncertainty can intimacy hold? And when does the effort to understand another person become a way of avoiding what their actions are already telling us? Listen closely. The song leaves room for both the ache of being unable to reach someone and the ache of never being seen beyond another person’s interpretation. Have you ever loved someone you could never quite understand—or felt that someone loved a version of you that you could no longer be? SOLANDINA — PUZZLE THE IMPOSSIBLE PUZZLE TO UNLOCK CARDINAL
