The 25 Creepiest Scenes from Asian Horror Films. Asian Horror Films are their own unique subgenre from the often extreme body horror and gore of J-Horror (Japanese Horror) to the creepy supernatural and paranormal horror of K-Horror (Korean Horror). J-Horror rose to prominence in the 1960s with a few classics of the horror genre with Matango (1963), Onibaba (1964) and Kwaidan (1964). However, the subgenre's golden age wouldn't arrive until the late 1990s and early 2000s with a flurry of the scariest and creepiest films of both decades including Ringu (1998), Audition (1999), Pulse (2001), Dark Water (2002) and Ju-on: The Grudge (2002). Unlike J-Horror, K-Horror didn't rise to prominence until the early 2000s with A Tale of Two Sisters (2002), The Host (2006), The Chaser (2008) and Thirst (2009). Also, unlike J-Horror which faded out in the late 2000s, K-Horror continued into the 2010s with some classic scares of the horror genre with The Wailing (2016), Train to Busan (2016) and Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018). And finally, in recent years Indonesian Horror surpassed J-Horror with it's extreme gore and scares with The Queen of Black Magic (2019) and May the Devil Take You Too (2020) and Thai Horror replaced K-Horror with a focus on the supernatural and folk horror in Inhuman Kiss (2019) and The Medium (2021).
