Phones and tablets can make hectic mornings easier but what happens when the screen turns off and it’s suddenly time to walk into the classroom? In this episode of Beyond the Caseload, Gabrielle is joined by Regina, Rehabilitation Director and Speech-Language Pathologist at Progressive Pediatric Therapy; Amber, Franchise Owner of Primrose School of Tradition; and Ashley, School Director at Primrose School of Tradition, to talk about screen time and what teachers and therapists are seeing during the transition into school. From difficult drop-offs and big emotions to attention, patience, social interaction, and classroom participation, the conversation explores why going directly from a screen into a busy learning environment can be challenging for some children and what parents can realistically try instead. The goal isn’t to eliminate technology completely. It’s about using it intentionally while giving children opportunities to build the real-life skills they need to navigate school, relationships, routines, and everyday challenges. Whether you’re a parent trying to survive busy mornings… an educator navigating difficult classroom transitions… or a therapist supporting children and families… this episode is packed with practical strategies you can actually use. In This Episode, You’ll Learn: • What teachers are seeing when children arrive at school using phones or tablets • Why transitioning away from a preferred screen activity can be difficult for young children • How morning routines can influence the transition into the classroom • Why patience, attention, communication, and emotional regulation matter for school readiness • What children gain from face-to-face interaction, movement, music, books, and open-ended play • Why boredom can actually create opportunities for creativity and problem-solving • How Primrose School of Tradition changed its approach to technology in the classroom • Simple screen-free car activities like I Spy, flashcards, music, books, and conversation • Creative ways to get children out the door, from animal walks to racing to the car • How giving children small choices can make morning transitions easier • What families may notice when they become more intentional about screen use • Why consistency, partnership, and leaning on your “village” can make a difference One of the biggest messages from this conversation is simple: It takes a village. Some mornings are going to be hard. Children are going to get upset. Parents are going to feel exhausted. And families don’t need to completely eliminate technology or create a perfect routine overnight. Small, consistent changes, like putting the tablet away during the drive to school, turning on music, playing I Spy, talking about the day ahead, or simply letting a child experience a little boredom can create more opportunities to practice communication, patience, creativity, problem-solving, and independence. Because preparing children for school isn’t only about what they know academically. It’s also about helping them build the skills to transition, interact, communicate, wait, play, problem-solve, and participate in the world around them.
