In this episode of Budo Is Dead, we speak with Gary Lever — a lifelong martial artist whose journey through Goju-Ryu Karate and other fighting systems has led him to question some of the assumptions we make about traditional martial arts. What are we actually training for? We talk about the difference between martial arts and real-world self-protection, the years of work required to truly understand a traditional Budo, and why serious practitioners sometimes need to look beyond their own style, lineage, or dogma to continue learning. We also explore cross-training, kata, function versus form, the reality and fantasy of martial arts, and whether today's practitioners are still willing to invest the time required to go deeper. This episode is not about rejecting tradition. It is about having enough respect for Budo to question it, test it, explore it — and continue learning. Budo Is Dead is a podcast by Yoshin Project.
