Walter Gerhardt “Pee Wee” Hunt was a trombonist from Ohio who graduated from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. In the early 1940s he co-founded the Casa Loma Orchestra that backed Glen Gray in his big band. Hunt went solo in 1943, then joined the merchant marines near the end of World War II. In 1948, he had a #1 hit with “Twelfth Street Rag.” “Oh!” was released in June, 1953, and went to #3 on the Billboard pop chart and #5 on Cashbox. It made #1 in Detroit, New Orleans, St. Louis, Kansas City, Syracuse New York, Mobile Alabama, Tampa Florida and several Massachusetts cities. It made #4 in Chicago on WMAQ and WCFL.
