What if the person being questioned in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial insists that the description of the armed intruder does not match him — even when photographs are placed before the court?
That was the tension during this latest courtroom exchange.
The questioning focused on the description given by Zandile Kumalo of the man who allegedly entered the house armed with a firearm on the night Senzo Meyiwa was killed.
According to the evidence read out in court, the man had a darker complexion, dreadlocks reaching down to his neck, a hat, prominent protruding eyes and visible facial contours.
But the witness being questioned rejected several of those identifying features.
He insisted that he was light in complexion, that his dreadlocks reached his lower back, and that he did not have the large, protruding eyes or facial contours described by Kumalo.
The defence then used photographs to challenge the way his appearance could be interpreted.
And just when the questioning appeared to be focused entirely on physical identification, another important issue emerged: an injury to the witness’s foot that had been examined by police officers in 2020.
