Meet young artists making art in an abandoned building

In 2021 Morage joined the first Gabi Studio, where young artists were given temporary access to a shared studio space by IMAL / Gabriele Space. In the final weeks before they had to leave the space, the creatives share why spaces like these matter to their work and what becomes possible when young artists have a place to create. For young artists, having an affordable place to create can mean much more than simply having a studio. It is a place where they can grow, develop new ideas or collaborations, take their work seriously, connect with others and become part of a community. But these spaces are not only important for the people who use them. Art and culture bring different people together and allow ideas to meet. They create spaces where people encounter each other without having to be the same. Art should not be something reserved for a few, but something that remains accessible to everyone. The film was shot during the COVID 19 pandemic, when isolation made the importance of places to meet, work, and create especially visible. Almost five years later, the questions raised by these artists feel more relevant than ever. Creative spaces are becoming increasingly difficult to access, and affordable places to work are disappearing. What happens when artists no longer have a place to create? What is lost when there are fewer spaces for people to meet, exchange ideas, and work together? This documentary is also a time capsule of a particular moment and a reminder of why art and culture need to be supported. Spaces for creative work should not depend only on individuals who are able to provide them privately.
