When you have a side hustle as a full time working parent, minutes are counted. This golf club flip had one rule: I was giving myself 30 minutes.
I bought two old golf club sets from the same Marketplace seller: a Wilson Staff Fat Shaft iron set and a vintage Mizuno Gold iron set.
The seller wanted $20 for the Wilsons and $15 for the Mizunos, but whenever I find something interesting on Facebook Marketplace, I have a habit: I always check what else the seller has listed.
Finding multiple items from the same seller can save you a trip, save you time, and sometimes give you a much better opportunity to negotiate a bundle.
In this case, I negotiated both sets down to $30 total.
So for my numbers, I'm considering my cost on the Mizunos to be $15.
Then I gave myself exactly 30 minutes to make them worth more.
The Mizuno Gold irons were vintage, scratched, missing the 4-iron, and definitely weren't going to become perfect in half an hour. I cleaned them up, refreshed the paint fill with some brighter neon colors, and tried to remove as many imperfections as I reasonably could.
The scratches ended up being deeper than I expected, which is something I absolutely hate finding halfway through a restoration.
Could I have made them better?
Absolutely.
But that's where golf club restoration and golf club flipping aren't always the same thing.
I could have spent much longer at the polishing wheel chasing every scratch and trying to make these old Mizuno irons beautiful. But if that extra hour of work doesn't add enough to the selling price, I'm not creating more profit.
I'm just lowering my hourly wage.
So when my 30 minutes were up, I stopped.
I kept the original vintage Golf Pride leather wrap grips because they were still in great condition and fit the character of the clubs perfectly.
Then I listed the set.
And they sold for $65.
Purchase price: $15
Selling price: $65
Profit: $50
Time spent: 30 minutes
Hourly rate: $100/hour
That's double my usual minimum target of $50/hour.
Not bad for an incomplete vintage golf set that I deliberately chose not to restore perfectly.
This is one of the biggest lessons I've learned from building a golf side hustle: the goal isn't necessarily to make every golf club as beautiful as possible.
The goal is to figure out which work actually creates enough value to be worth your time.
I also talk about another simple flipping habit in this video: always check the seller's other listings. Buying multiple items from the same person can mean fewer Marketplace trips, better bundle negotiations, and a much more efficient flipping side hustle.
That's also the kind of practical flipping strategy I'm exploring on my new FlipLab YouTube channel: ways to make flipping more efficient, profitable, and realistic when you don't have unlimited time.
If you're interested in golf club flipping, Mizuno golf clubs, vintage golf clubs, golf club restoration, Facebook Marketplace flipping, reselling for profit, side hustle ideas, extra income, or simply learning how to make more money flipping without spending your entire day doing it, this one's for you.
