This episode of my solo Balkan road trip is dedicated to the wild landscapes and dramatic history of Southern Albania and Northwestern Greece. Driving alone after exploring Kotor and Durmitor, I pushed further south toward the Ionian coast, heading straight for the Greek border. My route covers the dizzying switchbacks of the Llogara Pass, where Julius Caesar once marched his legions, and the high-cliff viewpoints overlooking the secret Cold War submarine tunnel in Porto Palermo. I explore the triangular walls of Porto Palermo Castle, cross the turquoise waters of Ksamil, and ride the old wooden cable ferry across the Vivari Channel to the partially submerged Venetian Triangle Castle. Crossing into Greece, I find the peaceful fishing haven of Sagiada Marina, pitch camp on the wild beaches near Igoumenitsa, and discover thousands of giant blue crabs hiding in the warm, shallow waters of Drepano Beach.
