Medugorje is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Europe and an unmissable destination in Herzegovina. Known for the reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary since 1981, it draws millions of visitors each year — both pilgrims and curious travellers.
Apparition Hill (Podbrdo or Brdo ukazanja) is where the apparitions of the Virgin Mary reportedly began on June 24, 1981. Six local children reported seeing and speaking with the Madonna, and the messages have continued through some of the visionaries to this day.
The path to the top is marked with bronze relief stations depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. The climb takes about 30–40 minutes and the terrain is rocky, so wear sturdy shoes. At the summit stands a white statue of the Virgin Mary marking the exact spot of the first apparition.
Tip: Visit Apparition Hill early in the morning (before 9 AM) or in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat in summer. Bring water and sunscreen — there is no shade on the path.
