Irreecha is the annual thanksgiving festival of the Oromo people, celebrated at the beginning of Birraa (the spring season following the heavy rainy season). It is celebrated to thank Waaqa (God) for blessings, mercy, peace, and the transition from the dark, difficult rainy months to a season of harvest and abundance. It is held annually in late September or early October.
Locations: The major celebrations take place in Bishoftu (at Lake Hora Harsadi) and Addis Ababa (Hora Finfinnee), drawing millions of people.
Key Symbols: Participants dress in vibrant traditional attire and gather near water bodies and sacred Odaa (sycamore) trees, carrying fresh green grass (coqorsa) and flowers (kelloo) to symbolize fertility, renewal, and life.
