Beethoven’s Hammerklavier with an 1819 first-edition score and the sound of a PERIOD PIANO: a sampled Clementi fortepiano from 1808. Follow the first movement, Allegro, of Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-flat major, Op. 106. The Artaria score is synchronized one enlarged system at a time, including the exposition repeat. Half note = 138 is the base tempo. Expressive phrasing, printed ritardandos and fermatas let the music breathe. This is a realization of a restored Clementi & Co. fortepiano at San Francisco State University. The sonata’s complete autograph is lost. The introduction shows a surviving sheet including sketches for its slow movement, held by The Morgan Library & Museum, and an AI-generated artistic portrait of Alekos Maniatis based on his reference photograph.
