I arranged this early Renaissance music for an ensemble of double-string instruments. I used mandolin, mandola and 12-string guitar. Japanese koto, a harp-like instrument, is also played on the first statement of the theme and in short phrases during the last section. This video contains a brief excerpt about the tune’s history.
If you adore the Dorian mode, this will put you in the mood. Purists will no doubt take issue with some of my interpretive harmonizations,
but I would just remind them that music belongs to everyone, and it's a vast playground of timeless sounds and patterns that are yearning to be stirred, percolated and teased into an effervescence that gives inspiration to the soul of the listener. Besides, there are several other versions of the piece available for purists to revel in, with Renaissance rapture.
