The Bill proposes to extend the legal protection currently available to the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana, to India’s National Song, Vande Mataram. Under the proposed amendment, intentionally preventing the singing of the National Song or causing a disturbance to an assembly engaged in its singing may attract imprisonment of up to three years, a fine, or both. The Bill seeks to amend Section 3 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. However, the Bill has currently been passed only by the Rajya Sabha. It must also be approved by the Lok Sabha and receive the President’s assent before it becomes an Act.
