LYRICS
Section C
Row twenty-two
Seat nine
They got three services and a coffee bar
Parking lot shuttle from the furthest car
Lights come down and the band comes in
Big screen tells me when to stand again
I been comin' here near on a year
Couldn't tell you one soul who knows I'm here
Slip in at the welcome, out on the last song
Nobody'd notice if I'd been gone
Thousand people singin'
And I never felt so small
I'm a pew without a name
Just a face in the crowd
Nobody'd call me missing
If I never came around
But the God of all creation
Knows the sound my heart makes
He don't see a pew
He sees me
And He calls me by my name
Back home it was the church by the county road
Forty folks and a piano that was sixty years old
Miss Hattie knew your birthday and your daddy's truck
Brother Dale would call you if you missed, just to check you weren't stuck
Moved two hundred miles for a better job
Traded all that knowin' for a city crowd
Ain't nobody's fault and it ain't a big sin
But a man gets lonesome where he can't get in
Thousand people singin'
And I never felt so small
I'm a pew without a name
Just a face in the crowd
Nobody'd call me missing
If I never came around
But the God of all creation
Knows the sound my heart makes
He don't see a pew
He sees me
And He calls me by my name
Late one night I read Isaiah forty-three
Swear that old page was written right to me
Wasn't said to a section or a number in a row
Said to a people that He'd never let go
Read it in Luke how He numbers every hair
Even on this head with the gray comin' there
If the Lord of heaven counts what falls on the floor
Reckon He knows who walks through the door
Isaiah forty-three, verse one
"Fear not: for I have redeemed thee
I have called thee by thy name
Thou art mine"
Thou art mine
Not a seat number
Mine
I'm a pew without a name
Just a face in the crowd
Nobody'd call me missing
If I never came around
But the God of all creation
Knows the sound my heart makes
He don't see a pew
He sees me
And He calls me by my name
So next Sunday I turned to the man on my right
Said "I'm Wade, been sittin' here a year tonight"
He laughed and said "I'm Luis, same as you
Been waitin' for somebody to say somethin' too"
Now we got a Tuesday table at the Waffle House
Him and me and three more figurin' faith out
Big church got smaller when I opened my mouth
Turns out I was never the only one left out
No more pew without a name
Ain't a face in the crowd
Got a brother on a Tuesday
Who would call if I weren't around
And the God of all creation
Knows the sound my heart makes
He never saw a pew
He saw me
And He called me by my name
