Yet David sought him out, remembered his covenant with Jonathan, restored Saul’s land, and welcomed Mephibosheth to eat continually at the king’s table as one of his sons. This story pictures the gospel. Humanity is sinful by nature and choice, spiritually helpless, and dependent upon the King’s mercy. Jesus, the greater David, keeps every divine promise, seeks His enemies, pays the cost of redemption through His own blood, and brings believers into God’s family. Grace does not merely spare us; it restores, adopts, provides, and grants fellowship at the King’s table. Therefore, hearers are called to turn to Christ in repentance and faith, consider adoption and care for vulnerable people, remain humble, practice steadfast love through compassionate action, and give God all the glory. Like Mephibosheth, believers receive every benefit, while the gracious King receives all praise. The sermon ultimately invites the church to remember that those once far away have been carried near and seated by grace.
