In the Nile Delta, archaeologist Pierre Montet uncovered the royal necropolis of Tanis: silver coffins, gold jewelry and burials that had lain undisturbed for millennia. The discovery might have rivaled archaeology’s greatest sensations, but it came as the Second World War was beginning.
After excavating ancient Byblos, Montet turned to Tanis, once the capital of northern Egypt. From 1939 onward, his team found the tombs of rulers of the 21st and 22nd Dynasties—first plundered chambers, then intact rooms filled with precious royal burial goods.
At the heart of the story is Psusennes I, whose untouched burial chamber contained treasures comparable to those of Tutankhamun. Discover how the war interrupted the excavations, what Montet found after his return, and why much of Tanis may still be waiting beneath the ground.
