Built between 1753 and 1769, the church replaced an earlier temple dedicated to San Pedro, which was badly damaged by the devastating earthquakes of 1724 and 1751. Commissioned by the Tenth Marqués de los Vélez and designed by the Hieronymite friar Pedro de San Agustín, it became one of the finest examples of the transition from Baroque to Neoclassical architecture in Almería. Its imposing stone façade, flanked by two 37-metre towers, rises above the historic town, while inside are three naves, a great dome and magnificent works of religious art. Declared a historic-artistic monument in 1982, the church remains the architectural heart of Vélez-Rubio — standing above the town much as it has for more than two and a half centuries.
