Çengelköy is especially well known for kokoreç, one of Istanbul’s classic street foods, made from seasoned lamb intestines cooked until crisp and usually served inside bread. The area is also known for fish restaurants, börek and pastries, Turkish tea, desserts and traditional neighborhood eateries. Çengelköy has a much longer story than its modern food scene. The area has roots going back to the Byzantine period, when its harbor was associated with the name Sophianai. During the Ottoman era, Çengelköy developed into an important Bosphorus village with waterside mansions, gardens and orchards. Produce such as almonds, strawberries, cherries and quince was once carried from the village to Istanbul by traditional market boats. The waterfront has remained central to life here. Çengelköy Pier still serves Bosphorus ferry passengers today. The historic pier building has been restored while preserving its original character and is registered as a cultural property. At night, the neighborhood takes on a different atmosphere.
