Below Explained: The Sea Creature, the Family Secrets and the Ending

Understand the sea creature, family revelations and unsettling ending of Below, Netflix’s six-part Canadian thriller created by Jesse McKeown and directed by Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver and Stephen Dunn. This episode follows fisherman Calvin Penney as mysterious attacks threaten a Newfoundland community already divided over whether to leave its home. We examine how Calvin’s childhood loss shapes his decisions, why his relationship with Wade becomes central to the mystery, and what marine biologist Fonda Howander discovers beneath the apparent chaos. The discussion connects the iceberg, the strange illness and the secrets surrounding Little Pot Rock before explaining the final rescue, its consequences and the closing image. Along the way, we consider how the series uses a creature story to explore parental responsibility, displacement and a changing environment.
