Indonesia Students vs Police: Water Cannons Fired As Protesters Demand Govt Action Over Rising Cost

Indonesia witnessed tense scenes as students clashed with riot police in Pontianak on October 21, protesting months of forest fires, toxic haze, rising inflation, fuel shortages and a lack of job opportunities. Police deployed water cannons as demonstrators burned objects and chanted “Revolution”, demanding urgent government action on environmental damage and mounting economic hardships. The forest fires have worsened air pollution and contributed to respiratory illnesses, with toxic haze spreading to neighbouring countries. Protesters have warned of escalating their movement if their demands remain unaddressed.
