Episode No: 946 On 27th February 1931, Chandra Shekhar Azad was martyred in a police encounter. Less than a month later, on 23rd March, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru were hanged. Soon after, the British police raided a house in Lahore and arrested a woman. She was taken to Lahore Fort, where British officer Jenkins confronted her, claiming they knew everything about her and had her entire record. Calmly, she replied, “If you have proof, put me on trial. Otherwise, let me go.” That woman was Durga Devi, widely known as Durga Bhabhi — a fearless revolutionary of India’s freedom struggle. This episode of Tarikh dives deep into the electrifying story of Durga Bhabhi, who was not only a close associate of Bhagat Singh but also the mastermind behind his dramatic escape from Lahore. Disguised as his wife and carrying a child on her lap, she travelled with Bhagat Singh while the British police, unaware, searched every corner of the station. Chandra Shekhar Azad, in the guise of a sadhu, travelled in a different compartment as backup. The entire operation was a masterclass in deception and courage. We explore how Durga Bhabhi helped revolutionaries by offering shelter, smuggling letters like a living postbox, and participating in major events like the funeral procession of Jatin Das after his death from a hunger strike in jail.
