Attica Zoo, located in Spata, near Athens, is the only zoological park in Greece. It opened in May 2000 as a specialized bird park and initially housed approximately 1,100 birds representing 300 species, making its avian collection one of the largest of its kind at the time. Today, the park has expanded to over 20 hectares and houses over 1,500 animals representing approximately 220 species.
Birds remain one of the zoo's most distinctive features. Visitors can see a variety of colorful and unusual species, including parrots, hornbills, pheasants, pigeons, vultures, and other exotic birds. Currently, the park features species such as the silver-cheeked hornbill, silver pheasant, green imperial pigeon, white-headed vulture, and Egyptian vulture.
A particularly attractive part of the avian collection is a group of greater flamingos. Their pale pink plumage, very long legs, and arched necks make them some of the most photogenic animals in the park. The zoo also organizes educational feeding sessions and flamingo keeper presentations on select event days.
Another highlight is the opportunity to observe exotic birds in spacious aviaries. Brightly colored parrots and other tropical species create a completely different atmosphere from traditional mammal enclosures and reflect the zoo's origins as an ornithological park. The zoo also regularly hosts "Birds in Flight" events, which are currently held twice daily, giving visitors an additional opportunity to observe bird behavior up close.
The zoo focuses not only on recreation but also on education, conservation, and public awareness. According to the park, approximately 30% of its animals are endangered or critically endangered, and conservation and breeding are among its primary goals.
