How can sustainable design support the next generation of scientists? In the sixth installment of Dattner Architects’ Sustainability in Architecture series, we explore the Stanley Manne Research Institute, an all-electric laboratory at the Bronx High School of Science that brings university-level research opportunities to high school students. Partner Daniel Heuberger shares the vision behind the project and Stanley Manne’s commitment to providing students with a professional laboratory environment for hands-on discovery and long-term research. Senior Associate Brian Nesin explores the building’s sustainable design strategies, including an energy-recovery ventilation system that captures energy from outgoing air to help condition incoming air, reducing the energy required to support the laboratory’s demanding ventilation needs. He also highlights the importance of collaboration with stakeholders throughout the design process. Project Designer Karin Hostettler reflects on lessons learned throughout the design process, from understanding specialized equipment to creating comfortable, functional spaces that respond to the daily needs of students and educators. Together, their perspectives reveal how sustainable systems and human-centered design can support a collaborative and innovative educational space that supports scientific discovery. Thank you to The Bronx High School of Science and The Science Survey for the additional imagery and footage featured in this video.
