Mm... Lord... let me tell it plain, the way it happened...
Woke up one Sunday mornin', felt the weight before I heard the words...
Said it was his buddy hurt, some kinda wreck on the county road...
But a lie's got a smell to it, and that whole house reeked of one.
Took my money too, a little at a time, like a man bleedin' a well he thinks nobody's watchin'...
Gas money, hospital money, borrowed trouble dressed up as need.
And I gave it.
Lord knows I gave it.
Poured myself out like rain on dry ground.
Found out where the water really went.
Straight down to her well.
Straight down to her bed.
I slapped him once, hard as sorrow lets a woman hit,
and it still wasn't nothin' next to what he'd done to me.
Cried myself to sleep more nights than the moon's got faces to show...
Kept askin' myself why I loved a man built outta nothin' but lies and empty promises...
He came back, you know.
Down on his knee, beggin' like a man at the river's edge askin' for baptism he don't mean...
And I let him believe I believed him. Let that be his last mistake.
Packed my bags while that man lay sleepin', dreamin' whatever men dream when they think they've won...
Took every dollar he had left in that house, took it clean the way he'd taken from me...
Was gone with the mornin' star before he even stirred.
Left him just a note upon the door, wrote it plain so even a liar could understand it...
Left a note that said "honey, I don't live here no more"
Left a note that said "honey, I don't live here no more"
What's sowed in the dark always comes up in the light, and now it's your turn to be cryin' at my door
Money's gone, gone, gone, and so is the fool who stayed
Money's gone, gone, gone, and so is the price you paid
Turnabout's fair play, baby, now it's your turn to reap what you made
Mm-hmm... that's the truth of it, Lord... that's the truth of it...
Yes it is...
Yes it is, Lord...
Turnabout's fair play...
Fair play, fair play, oh yes it is...
