Why Do We Ask Kids What They Want to Be When They Grow Up?

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a question almost every child has been asked at some point. A doctor? A teacher? An astronaut? A famous singer? But Sooo… I was thinking… why do we ask children to decide what they want to be before they’ve even had a chance to discover who they are? As adults, many of us are STILL figuring out what we want to do with our lives. Our interests change, our dreams evolve, and sometimes we discover passions we never even knew existed. So why do we put so much emphasis on asking children what career they want instead of encouraging them to explore all the possibilities?
