Keri Opai talks about his work creating a glossary of te reo Māori terms for the mental health, addiction and disability sectors. “He mana tō te kupu” — “Words have great power”. Words have the power to explain, express and define how we understand and experience the world. Keri says, too often language surrounding mental health, addiction and disability is negative, deficit based and stigmatising. The project, Te Reo Hāpai, brings people with lived experience together, with input from clinicians and practitioners, to create words that recognise humanity and promote hope and dignity. In this podcast, Keri explains the principles and processes behind the work.
