Here is the complete section-by-section breakdown of what we encounter on this drive: 🚗 SECTION 1: THE APPROACH & CONNECTIVITY • Total Length: 13.3 km access-controlled bypass route. • Connection Points: Starts right after the Khopoli Exit (Mumbai side) and smoothly merges back at Kusgaon near Lonavala (Pune side). • The Big Benefit: It completely cuts out the slow 19 km ghat section where traffic from the 6-lane expressway and 4-lane NH-48 used to merge. It reduces the total driving distance by roughly 6 km and saves a massive 25 to 30 minutes of travel time under normal conditions (and hours during monsoon jams!). • Project Cost: Built at an impressive cost of approximately ₹6,695 crore. 🚇 SECTION 2: TUNNEL 1 (THE KHOPOLI TUNNEL) • Total Length: 1.68 km. • Lanes: 8 lanes wide (4 traffic lanes + 1 dedicated service shoulder in each direction). • Design: Built extra wide (approx. 23 meters) to eliminate that cramped, claustrophobic tunnel feeling right from the entrance. 🌉 SECTION 3: THE TIGER VALLEY VIADUCT (INDIA'S HIGHEST ROAD BRIDGE) • Total Length: 650 meters. • Tower/Pylon Height: Massive 182-meter-high pylons support this cable-stayed layout (making them significantly taller than Mumbai's Bandra-Worli Sea Link pylons!). • Height Above Ground: Stands a breathtaking 125 to 184 meters directly above the Tiger Valley floor, making it officially India’s tallest road cable-stayed bridge.
